Order size doesn’t just change cost, it changes the entire shape of a shipment, and it’s worth understanding the difference before deciding which makes sense for your business.
The mixed pallet (or partial load)
A smaller shipment, often consolidated with other buyers’ freight on the same vessel, sharing container space. This is the realistic option for most small and mid-sized retailers and restaurants, with simpler logistics but a higher relative shipping cost per unit.
The full container
An entire shipping container dedicated to a single buyer’s order. This dramatically lowers the per-unit shipping cost but requires enough order volume to actually fill the space efficiently, since a mostly empty container wastes the cost advantage it’s meant to provide.
Where the breakeven roughly sits
There’s no single universal number, it depends on product weight and density as much as unit count, but as a rough guide, most of our buyers don’t consider a full container until they’re ordering at a scale well beyond a typical first or second wholesale order.
What full-container buyers need to plan for differently
Beyond the order itself, a full container requires confirmed warehouse or storage capacity to receive it, and often a longer lead time to coordinate production volume large enough to fill it, neither of which is a concern with a smaller mixed shipment.
A reasonable growth path
Most businesses we work with start on mixed pallets, build up order volume and reorder consistency over time, and only consider a full container once their regular order size approaches what would actually fill one efficiently.
Common questions
Can I combine multiple product categories into a single container order? Yes, and most buyers at that scale do, mixing bowls, plates, and other categories from the wider tableware range to fill the space rather than ordering a single product type.
Is there a cost advantage to a partially full container versus a mixed pallet? Generally not much of one, the cost advantage of a full container comes specifically from maximizing the space, a partially empty one often costs similarly to a well-organized mixed pallet.
